HONG KONG – February 13, 2023 – Acker marked the beginning of the 2023 auction season in Hong Kong with a live sale on Friday evening February 10, realizing more than HKD $48M/US $6M in sales. Hong Kong and China celebrated their full reopening with a bidding vengeance as live bidding activity caused the auction to run 50% longer than anticipated. The Emperor, the featured collection of the day, reigned supreme with more than HKD $31M/US $4M, taking nearly 70% of both the proceeds and the Top Ten lots in this jubilant auction. An offer direct from the cellars of Domaine Duroche smashed high estimates, with all lots except one setting a New World Record for a total of eighteen all-time highs for the highly demanded Domaine.

Bordeaux and Burgundy shared control of the Top Ten Lots, led by Domaine de la Romanee Conti as usual. The number one and two lots in the sale were both DRCs from the 1971 vintage, a jeroboam of La Tache bringing in a mammoth US$218,477 and a magnum of Romanee Conti selling for an equally impressive $96,387, both shattering high estimates and setting New World Records. The third position went to twelve bottles of 1961 Chateau Latour garnering $61,045. Next up was a three-way tie for the fourth spot with twelve bottles of 1982 Chateau Lafleur, a twelve-bottle assortment of 1997 DRC, and a magnum of 1971 DRC La Tache all ringing in at $51,406. Comte Liger-Belair took the next two positions with three magnums each of La Romanee in OWC, as the 2012 went for $48,194 while the 2005 sold for $41,768. A double magnum of 1959 Chateau Lafite Rothschild also achieved $41,768. The Top Lots wrapped up with a six-way tie for tenth place at $38,555 featuring three magnums each of 2009 and 2010 Comte Liger-Belair La Romanee in OWC, six bottles of 1990 DRC La Tache, a magnum of 2005 DRC Romanee Conti, six bottles of 2005 Domaine Leroy Romanee St. Vivant, and six magnums of 2001 Chateau Le Pin all tying for the last spot on the top of the charts.

An offer direct from the cellars of Domaine Duroche blew through its estimates, setting a remarkable eighteen New World Records, which was all but one of the lots on offer. All-time highs for the greatly sought after Domaine featured a magnum of 2020 Chambertin Clos de Beze Hommage a Phillippe in OWC hammering home US$9,639, a bottle of 2020 Griottes Chambertin in OWC trading for $7,068, three bottles of 2019 Chambertin Clos de Beze in OWC collecting $4,177, a Jeroboam of 2018 Duroche Gevrey Chambertin Estournelles St. Jacques in OWC bringing in $2,056, and one magnum of Gevrey Chambertin Lavaux St. Jacques Vieilles Vignes in OWC fetching $1,799.

“What an auction! The energy in the room and live online was a different level than in December. While we said Hong Kong was back then, I can definitively say that Hong Kong – and China – is truly back now that all restrictions have been lifted. It was so great to see many old friends from the mainland come down to Hong Kong to attend the sale in person,” reported Acker Chairman John Kapon. “The auction lasted two hours longer than anticipated due to all the intense action in the room. We were thrilled to have selections from The Emperor’s brilliant collection once again and grateful for Pierre and Marianne Duroche’s personal collection from the Domaine for which collectors were frothing at the paddle. Now we set our sights on our first La Paulée auction, a behemoth sale featuring 20 direct consignments from some of Burgundy’s greatest producers and an estimated US$15M in sales. We are currently working on our April auctions, with consignments being accepted for both. Based on how 2023 has started, it looks like it will be a great vintage for the wine auction market.”

Acker’s auction season continues with the La Paulée auction on Thursday and Friday March 2-3, a U.S. auction on Wednesday April 5th, and a Hong Kong sale on Saturday April 15. Acker is currently accepting wines for its April U.S. and Hong Kong sales with a deadline of March 10. Weekly web auctions close every Friday. For more information, email info@ackerwines.com.
