Three of the Top Lots from Acker’s January Delaware Auction:
Lot 44, 45: 12 bottles each 1989 and 1990 Chateau Petrus in OWC
Lot 1002: 12 bottles 1998 D’Auvenay (Leroy) Bonnes Mares
Lot 828, 829: 6 magnums and 1 double magnum 2005 Chateau Le Pin in OWCs

Acker hosted its first ever Delaware auction, as well as the company’s first three evening, “live online” sale on January 13th, 14th, and 15th, in a smashing success, exceeding the high estimate for the overall auction. The fine wine market picked up right where it left off in 2020, as three stellar cellars headlined the auction, achieving 152 New World Records. As 2020’s top wine auction house globally, Acker already has an estimated US$20 million of sales in the first five weeks of 2021, leading the market once again in far and away fashion.

Bordeaux surged to the forefront of the Top Ten Lots of the auction, as the top two positions were held by the stalwart region as twelve bottles each of 1990 and 1989 Chateau Petrus in original wood stood proudly atop the podium, selling for $52,290 and $49,800 respectively. Third place was shared by two of Burgundy’s top names in one superlative vineyard, as twelve bottles each of 1998 d’Auvenay (Leroy) Bonnes Mares, a New World Record, and 1995 G. Roumier Bonnes Mares each realized $47,310. The fifth position was split as well, with six magnums each of 2005 Dujac Chambertin and 2005 Chateau Le Pin, both in original wood, bringing in $43,575 a piece. In the seventh spot stood twelve bottles of 2016 Chateau Le Pin in OWC that fetched $37,350. Eighth place was shared between three lots, rounding out the Top Ten, as twelve bottles of 2015 Dujac Chambertin, a New World Record, twelve bottles of 2001 Chateau Le Pin, and nine bottles of D’Auvenay (Leroy) Mazis Chambertin each realized $34,860.

Again, it was the wines of Domaine Dujac that took first place in the record books, as their wines attained 20 out of the total 152 New World Records. Standouts from the marvelous, Morey St. Denis-based Domaine include three bottles of 2005 Chambertin for $8,093, three magnums of 2008 Romanee St. Vivant in OWC for $11,205, and one magnum of 2009 Clos St. Denis for $2,988. The rare wines from Lalou Beze-Leroy’s Domaine Leroy, Domaine d’Auvenay, and Maison Leroy tallied up 13 New World Records, headlined by two bottles of 2000 d’Auvenay Chevalier Montrachet that fetched $18,674, one bottle of 2002 Domaine Leroy Musigny for $24,900, and ten bottles of 1964 Maison Leroy Echezeaux for $11,827. The age-worthy white wines of Domaine Leflaive also claimed 13 New Records, led by twelve bottles of 1994 Chevalier Montrachet in OCB that fetched $10,583 and six bottles of 2010 Batard Montrachet in OWC that realized $5,603.

“It was these three superlative collections that brought even more bidders out of the woodwork in a rollicking start to the new year,” extolled Acker Chairman, John Kapon. “While it was hard to imagine the fine wine market fortifying itself even further, it seems like 2021 will put its own unique stamp on things as we continue to see record-breaking numbers sale after sale. The provenance of these prestigious cellars proved that collectors continue to seek out the best bottles available, and the search for these prized wines is never-ending. We look forward to returning to Hong Kong with our first sale of 2021 on January 22nd and 23rd, with four fantastic, featured collections, as well as a consignment direct from the cellars of the greatest producer in the Rhone, Jean-Louis Chave. We continue in Delaware on February 4th and 5th, with Acker’s third annual Grande Fête de Bourgogne, headlined by eleven Domaine-direct consignments from Burgundy’s best names. Excited is an understatement!”

The auction season continues for Acker with another “live online” auction in Hong Kong on January 22nd and 23rd and returns to Delaware with the third annual Grande Fête de Bourgogne on February 4th and 5th. Acker is currently accepting wines for its winter “live online” auctions, with weekly web auctions closing every week. For more information, email info@ackerwines.com.
